Frida, My Love is a musical with a running time of two hours and ten minutes plus intermission.
There are solo roles for Frida and two other women. Diego has four solos and there are trios for male singers and five part harmony for a chorale.
Only one stage set is required, with several scenes played in front of the curtain. A flower vendor’s stand, like that in Diego Rivera’s paintings of the calla lily vendor, wheels back to make room for two scenes defined by lighting at center stage: the interrogation of Frida Kahlo at a police station, and the assassination of Leon Trotsky.
A newspaper kiosk stands downstage right. A silhouette of the casa azul, Frida’s Blue House, is against the back wall. It can reverse to show a headboard for bedroom scenes which are suggested but not shown, i.e. the first assassination attempt on Trotsky, and Frida’s affair with Trotsky.
The script calls for Diego Rivera to be sometimes drawing cartoons for a mural on sketch pad paper mounted on the sides of the procenium arch.
There are nine speaking/singing roles with double casting possible for some.
